Higher Roddon Farm

Luxury Rural Accommodation – Grass Fed Beef and Lamb

Welcome to Higher Roddon Farm

Although we have only lived at the farm since February 2021 our small family farm has remained unchanged since the second World War. With lots of small fields with thick native hedgerows, split into a patchwork of grassland and woodland, the farm is a wildlife oasis in the foothills of Exmoor.

Duncan and Alexis live here with their young family and we want to continue to improve the biodiversity of the farm alongside building a sustainable farm business incorporating luxury rural accommodation and grass-fed beef and lamb.

We are lucky enough to have a wide variety of wildlife on our farm including tawny and barn owls, deer, buzzards, pheasants, swallows, bullfinches, fieldfares and numerous bats, butterflies and beetles! Take a look at our Wildlife page.

We follow a grass-fed, low input, regenerative agriculture philosophy. This means that (apart from our bulls, rams and boars which have to be bought in to prevent in-breeding) all of our animals are born on the farm. They stay with their mothers’ as long as possible growing well on their mothers’ milk and our beautiful grass. Apart from our pigs, all of our animals are only fed grass from the farm or hay (from our species rich hay meadows) in winter. We believe this is more sustainable, gives us a minimal carbon footprint and provides our animals with the best possible lives.

Buying direct from us enables you to buy your meat direct from our farm.  This means a lower carbon footprint and complete traceability.  All of our animals are born on our farm and graze in our fields under our beech and oak trees.  They are grass fed; we don’t feel the need to supplement their diet as they thrive on our land without us interfering in their natural growth.

Luxury Rural Accommodation

We have two couple’s shepherds’ huts with (what we believe to be) the best views in Somerset! We are a small working hill farm so there is plenty to see although with those views come some good hills so your thighs will see plenty of work whilst you are here! We are dog friendly although with lots of lambs and sheep around we do ask that you are respectful with your dogs and do keep an eye on the billy goat – he can sometimes be quite protective of his ladies!

Our shepherds’ huts have constant hot water, proper showers and flushing loos. The kitchen area has an electric fridge and hob. There is a wood burning stove and a very comfortable double bed – with those outstanding views over Exmoor and the Brendon hills.

Directions:

Most people approach us from the East having gone through Wiveliscombe and Langley Marsh. Sat Nav will take you to just outside Langley Marsh so keep heading West on the road out of the village and after a couple of hundred yards you will see our farm on your left.  The drive is steep (changing it is part of our 5-year plan!) so we suggest either taking a very wide swing into it from the opposite side of the road or continue up the road for another couple of hundred yards, turn around in a large layby up there and approach from the other way.
